Viscostatic hub: a new product for the well-being of your vehicles

We have always intercepted new products to offer them to you with the quality and convenience of GGN-branded remanufactured products.

Our experience in the sector has always allowed us to “see” ahead of the competition and understand future scenarios and trends in our markets.
This ability, combined with the desire to improve, has made us capable, more than anyone else, of intercepting requests and the latest innovations, with the aim of studying them, realising them and proposing them to our customers.
For years we have been committed to ensuring that every novelty and every item that meets our customers’ needs is put into our catalogue, with all available variants and a guarantee of compatibility with all models. This is because it is important that whatever you are looking for can be found and delivered quickly.
That is why today we are telling you about a new product that has just been added to the catalogue, the result of our team’s constant research: the viscostatic hub.

Viscostatic hub or coupling: what is it?

Viscostatic hub, viscous coupling, viscostatic joint: different names for the same component that is used on rear-wheel drive vehicles to control and maintain engine temperature through viscous coupling with the cooling fan.
It is well known that every internal combustion engine needs to be supported by an excellent cooling system to avoid melting the cylinder head or causing irreparable damage to the engine. Although car components are made to work at very high temperatures, the need for a cooling system at peak load times is crucial.
The viscostatic hub plays a key role in this sense and it is a small jewel of mechanical engineering that controls the fan speed for cooling and, at the same time, reduces stress on the engine.

Viscostatic hub or coupling: how does it work?

The viscostatic hub is, as we have seen, a mechanical coupling used to activate the rotary motion of the fan when the engine is very hot and operates with a working fluid that can be thick oil, a silicone substance or a gelatinous material.
Consisting of two bimetal discs, one connected to the crankshaft and one attached to the fan behind the cooling radiator, the viscous coupling is activated by the different expansion coefficients of the two metal alloys, which act in different ways depending on the temperature of the airflow from the engine.
When the temperature of the cooling liquid is high – and thus the engine is overheating – the air flow increases and the bimetallic component tends to flex towards the side with the lowest expansion coefficient, thus opening the hub valve. The opening of the valve lets a viscous fluid into the working chamber and produces a power transmission to the fan, thereby cooling the motor.
